Certified Nursing Assistant or Clinical Assistant I or CA Trainee

SEARHC was established in 1975 under the provisions of the Indian Self-Determination Act as a non-profit health consortium which serves the health interests of the residents of Southeast Alaska. The intent of this legislation was to have Indian Health Service programs and facilities turned over to tribal management. Our contracting with IHS began in 1976 when we took over management of the Community Health Aides Program. In 1982, we took over operation of the IHS Juneau clinic, now the Ethel Lund Medical Center, and took over operation of Sitka’s Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in 1986. We are one of the oldest and largest Native-run health organizations in the nation.

The purpose is to develop the skills to facilitate the delivery of medical services by assisting healthcare providers with direct patient care (infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric) and the day to day operation of the SEARHC Medical Clinic. The Clinical Assistant Trainee will be moved to a Clinical Assistant I position upon successful completion of training program.

The Clinical Assistant provides care to infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, adults and elderly in a rural ambulatory care clinic. Essential job responsibilities include rooming patients, performing clinical duties, maintaining lab and exam rooms, quality assurance activities and demonstrating customer service skills.   In addition, Clinical Assistants perform administrative and data management tasks.  Information is written in patients’ chart along with patients’ medical history.  This position works closely with providers giving support such as rooming patients, perform CLIA-waived laboratory tests, answering phones, processing provider orders, and participation in training processes and staff meetings.  Must demonstrate good judgment and be self-starter, but works under close supervision of provider.

The Certified Nursing Assistant assists in the delivery of primary health care and patient care management.

Must have the ability to react in a calm functional manner and make sound judgments within scope of duties when taking care of critically ill patients and in the event of emergencies. Job requires lifting of patients who are non-ambulatory on a regular interval.  Mentally requires a caring attitude in dealing with both acute and non-acute patients and families on a steady basis.  Job pace is rapid and there is constant pressure on the job to complete nursing assignments and answer patient call lights. Maintain accountability for all actions taken. Accept delegation from supervising RN.

This position requires prolonged standing and full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients. Corrected vision and hearing to normal range are required. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. The Certified Nursing Assistant can be exposed to communicable diseases for bodily fluids, toxic substances, medicines and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
