Medical Lab Technician
SEARHC was established in 1975 under the provisions of the Indian Self-Determination Act as a non-profit health consortium which serves the health interests of the residents of Southeast Alaska. The intent of this legislation was to have Indian Health Service programs and facilities turned over to tribal management. Our contracting with IHS began in 1976 when we took over management of the Community Health Aides Program. In 1982, we took over operation of the IHS Juneau clinic, now the Ethel Lund Medical Center, and took over operation of Sitka’s Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in 1986. We are one of the oldest and largest Native-run health organizations in the nation.
Under minimal supervision, applies advanced technical skills and seasoned judgment to independently and competently provide a full range of sample test analyses and laboratory services in a SEARHC laboratory. Depending on location shift work and night and weekend call may be required to provide 24 hour laboratory coverage. Perform CLIA defined waived, moderate, and high complexity testing. Works with infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients.
The work typically involves full responsibility for all technical aspects of the laboratory and includes a wide variety of duties involving diverse and complex technical problems and considerations, i.e. procuring compatible, lifesaving units of blood for a patient with antibodies. MLT makes decisions that directly or indirectly affect the quality of patient care and can be “life or death” decisions or problems with the assistance of the MLS or Lab Manager. Assists with training of new employees during the orientation period and as directed. Assists the laboratory manager with Process Improvement activities associated with their departments as directed.
