Position Summary
This position provides health care to patients in SEARHC primary care clinics and is a key component in accomplishing SEARHC’s mission. Care includes urgent, acute, chronic and preventative health care to all ages and genders.

Additional Note:
We have two full time needs:   One will be located within Mt. Edgecumbe Hospitals Primary Care Clinic and one will work in our hospital (Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital.)

  1. Based on the professional license, certificates, credentials and scope of practice this position provides medical care in a culturally appropriate and caring manner to all patients presenting to SEARHC primary care clinics. Care may involve conditions which are urgent or emergent as well as acute, chronic or preventative. Patients may be male or female and be of any age. For each patient the provider shall obtain a thorough history, perform an appropriate physical examination use appropriate laboratory and /or radiology as available and appropriate to develop a working diagnosis. The position provides treatment and medications as needed and available as well as follow up care and patient education.  All information pertaining to patient care shall be documented and recorded in the patient medical record. Consultation shall be obtained as required or as indicated based on the condition of the patients.  Position provides primary call on a rotation and assists other providers as needed when available.
  1. As assigned the position shall participate in the overall operation of the primary care clinic which may include representing the clinic on various internal or external teams or work groups to solve problems or improve operation. Position may be tasked with duties such as ordering supplies and/or medications. Position will participate in and/or lead trainings or drills for medical staff. Position may work with patients in group settings such as pre natal, diabetic or other patient groups. Position participates in community health education, promotion and disease prevention activities such as health fairs or screenings. 
Position Complexities
Providing care in emergency situations is the most demanding and difficult aspect of the position. Providers may be called out at any time to deal with trauma or a medical condition that is life threatening to one or more patients.  This position is a covered position in accordance with the Indian Child Protection Act (ICPA).   The position operates in community setting where they are generally accessible to patients making it difficult to totally be off duty.  Patients may be angry and hostile when they do not receive care at the time or in the manner they want.
Position Qualifications
License and Certification:
  • Current active and unrestricted Alaska license as a Physician Assistant or Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Board Certified Physician Assistant or Family Nurse Practitioner, or certified within specialty
  • Drug Enforcement Agency certification
  • Current certifications in ACLS, PALS and ATLS or certified within one year of hire
  • Two years of experience as a midlevel practitioner, experience or training prior to training as a midlevel provider may be considered by the Medical Director of Primary Care Clinics as meeting this requirement
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
  • Basic emergency care
  • Common disease processes and pharmacology
  • Effective administration skills in interacting with staff and patients
Skilled in:
  • Taking a patient history in a settings calling for a brief and focused history as well as a complete history
  • Medical equipment operation and when given interpretation of data provided
Ability to:
  • Make an assessment based on history, exam, lab, x-ray and other data
  • Incorporate health promotion and prevention activities into patient care
  • Listen to patient’s complaints and present information to patients in an understandable and organized manner
